　1929年的柏林，作家埃利希•卡斯特纳的家门前出现了一个七岁的男孩这个叫汉斯的孩子无比喜爱卡斯特纳的作品。起初，卡斯特纳对这个孩子不以为意，后来却发现汉斯丰富的想象力可以帮助他进行文学创作。在其推荐下，汉斯也有幸成为了电影《埃米尔与侦探们》中“小星期二”一角的扮演者。不久，纳粹上台执政，卡斯特纳因生活威胁而被迫断绝了与汉斯的联系。仍以笔名进行创作的他却必须对作品去政治化；为了不被排斥，汉斯则加入了希特勒少年队，但他依然保持善良本心。几年之后，二人重逢，但他们的友情却不得不被残酷的战争牵连，而陷入艰难的境地。
